Our Story

Our Beginnings

In the late 70′s a group of women began attending a weekly Bible Study. A revival broke out in these women’s lives and they desired that their husbands would join in what God was doing. The result was the Friday Night Fellowships. This was a time when couples and families would come together for worship, sharing testimonies, and Bible study. From these groups, Emmanuel Church was formed. Emmanuel Church held its first official meeting in September of 1980. Being a non-denominational church, Emmanuel encouraged people from different Christian traditions to allow their diversity to add depth and richness to worship, discipleship and ministry. The scripture that was the glue to their unity was Luke 4:18:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. – ESV

Today

Luke 4:18 continues to be the heart of our church. We are being challenged to open our eyes to the needs of the city that surrounds us and to follow God, wherever that may take us. Our story is not finished, it is still being written and we pray for wisdom as we seek our role in God’s redemptive story in our city and in the world.
